Time For EcoSystem Support for Mobile VoIP
EQO hitting the skids isn't really good news for the mobile VoIP industry. It shows that brute force carrier driven approaches drive companies out of business. Hopefully the carriers begin to adopt the Microsoft approach of keeping their ultimate friends alive. When Microsoft fueled Apple back in the 90's it created a competitive friend. Now that Linux is in place, Apple becomes a valuable ally to Microsoft. Carriers would be smart to partner with emerging Mobile VoIP companies, and eco system players like Microsoft, Apple and Google, all of which have carrier relationships, would be smart to help the mobile...

The ClearWire RoadMap
Paul Kapustka, best known these days for his WiMax focused SideCut Reports, has penned a very concise, complete and clear roadmap of what is ahead for the now all things full speed ahead "Clearwire." The agenda shows that Barry West and his team from former XOHM, Clearwire and the partners have their act together from a planning and marketing perspective. Now they have to do the hard part. Implement and execute.

Will The Carriers Block VoIP on the Dell UMPC?
With the mobile operators leaning on Apple to not let VoIP calls be received easily on the iPhone, one has to wonder really if it's the operators or Apple. Dean Bubley of Disruptive Wireless got me thinking today about that as he mused about the pending Dell UMPC with an embedded 3G data chip on board. Here's how I look at it. On the UMPC's I have all I need to do is add a 3G dongle and run an IM app like Skype, Gizmo or Yahoo Messenger or a Softphone client like Eyebeam or Bria from Counterpath. The laptop...

What Will More Mobile Broadband Cost?
Om has a post about the expected explosion of Mobile Broadband. In the USA one expert I know said for AT&T to double capacity of their network "it will take a 7 billion dollar coat of paint." That's a lot of iPhones.

Fring Downsizes
Hat tip to Ken Camp who caught wind of the news (via TechCrunch) that Fring is laying off 20 percent of their workforce. Ken also shares some viewpoints about Fring and its lack of reliability/stability. GigaOm has a roundup post with Om's usual on target insight as well.

Time For A SIP of 3G
I've made 3G calls with SIP on my Nokia N and E series phones using both Truphone and Gizmo, but on my iPhone I'm hobbled just like everyone else who uses on (that's not Jailbroken). Sure Fring works with SIP but its also WIFi. Right now it's time for Steve Jobs to explore more deeply the concept of Openness vs. contractual closeness. SIP over 3G rocks, and that would drive data package sales for the carriers. I'm not the only person in this camp. It seems Ted Wallingford and Ken Camp are too.

Keating On VoxOx
I want to love the idea of VoxOx but I have some degree of hesitation, so check out Tom Keating's post first, then try it yourself. My biggest concern is do we need more apps that does a piece of the same thing or do we need more integration and deeper functionality for each service the app is supporting. So, while I have that level of hesitation I do like the direction the newcomer is taking.

The Inq-1 From Three
Yesterday at the Three store inside Liverpool Street Station I got my first look at the new INQ-1 from Hutchison a.k.a. Three. It's a very impressive phone, and one that is clearly designed for the social mobile generation. While they are not yet on sale, the price point is expected to hit retail next week here in London. The fit and finish is superb and it feels great in your hands. If you use Facebook and Skype it's got to be on your to be considered list if you're in the UK or another Three served country.

Record And Sync via WiFi on iPod Touch and iPhone
The more I use my iPhone as a "weekend" device, the more I am loving the capabilities that developers find they can muster from it. Take the folks at Griffin who have come up with two companion applications, italk, a voice recording program and italk sync which moves the files over WiFi to the Mac or PC (yes they have both flavors) The way I see this I can now use the iPhone or new Touch as a voice notetaking device, then move them over to the Mac via italk sync, in an easy and simple way. This will make...
